Jackaroo Project Management - Do the job right

Project Management is not just an activity but an actual business discipline where Project Managers are required to use all the skills needed to be an effective General Manager.

There are many methodologies available to Project Managers but you will find that most of them simply are derivatives of the PMI's (Project Management Institute) Book of Knowledge as set out by their Standards Committee. It is these standards that Jackaroo Solutions rigorously apply and adhere to.

Our Project Managers are required to manage all aspects of:

  • Integration - The processes required to ensure that the various elements of the project are properly coordinated.

  • Scope - The processes required to ensure that the project includes ALL the work required, and ONLY the work required, to complete the project successfully.

  • Time - The processes required to ensure timely completion of the project.

  • Cost - The processes required to ensure the project is completed within the approved budget.

  • Quality - The processes required to ensure the project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken.

  • Resources - The processes required to make the most effective use of resources within the project.

  • Communications - The processes required to ensure timely and appropriate generation, collection, dissemination, storage and ultimate disposition of project information.

  • Risk - The processes concerned with identifying, analysing and responding to project risk.

  • Procurement - The processes required to acquire goods and services from outside the performing organisation.

We have also found that a common fault when organisations implement a PMO (Project Management Office) causing them to not experience the full benefits of their PMO is that they tend to attach it to the side of their organisation. PMO's and their methodologies need to be entwined throughout the organisations systems, procedures and policies irrespective of whether they are an Operational or Centre of Excellence PMO.

An illustrated example of this is the Value Chain Concept that we have implemented in many organisations that removes the old standard business disciplines and tailors the organisation to delivering value to the customers creating a greater return using philosophies like NOAC (Next Operation As Customer) etc. Any operation that is not a standard business activity along the value chain is always a Project. This example uses a Bus Company...

In this organisation we also project managed the implementation of a Trip Database on a Sun Server using Oracle to capture 40 million passenger movements per year, Smart Cards and ETM's (Electronic Ticketing Machines), Deport Management System software that we developed just for them, a $40m bus replacement program as well as many many other projects.

Our Director, Ian Baker, began Project Management 20 years ago in the construction industry where the demands placed on Project Managers are far greater than the technology industries.

In the construction industry, Risk, Issue & Contingency Management is an hourly exercise as you are dealing with elements of many trades, suppliers, stakeholders, and then above all there is the weather. For example, the Drainers should complete their work today and the concreters are coming in tomorrow. Suddenly it rains preventing the drainers from finishing but if you put the concreters off for 1 day they will go and do another job and not return for a whole week. What do you do? Then the Union comes in and advises that you are putting the barbecue on today for all on-site workers - there goes the barbecue budget. All these things have happened. This type of experience prior to moving into IT project management 10 years ago has been the main contributor to Jackaroo Solutions successes in IT Project Management.

There is a line in a well known fairy tale that says "Any path will lead you somewhere if you don't know where you are going". Projects MUST know where they are going. Without proven formal project management methodologies placing a framework around the project, your project could go anywhere.
